Galium Odoratum, commonly known as Sweet Woodruff or Wild Baby's Breath, is a delightful and aromatic perennial herb native to Europe, North Africa, and parts of Asia. This low-growing plant is highly valued for its charming, star-shaped white flowers and the sweet, hay-like scent it releases when crushed or dried. The most distinctive feature of Sweet Woodruff is its fragrant foliage. When the leaves are crushed or dried, they emit a sweet and earthy aroma, often described as reminiscent of freshly mown hay. This fragrance has made it a popular choice for potpourri and sachets.

In the late spring to early summer, Sweet Woodruff produces small, star-shaped white flowers with four petals. These dainty blooms create a carpet of white in shaded garden areas, making it a lovely ground cover. Galium Odoratum is often used as a ground cover in shady or woodland gardens. Its low, spreading growth habit makes it an excellent choice for filling in gaps and providing an attractive, green carpet in areas where grass struggles to grow.

Beyond its ornamental value, Sweet Woodruff has a history of culinary and medicinal uses. It has been used to flavour beverages and desserts, particularly May wine, and is also believed to have mild sedative properties. This plant thrives in shaded or partially shaded areas, making it a versatile choice for gardeners looking to add interest and fragrance to less sun-exposed locations.
